Chan prize money increased

The continental body has announced an increase of the total prize money by 32% to $10.4 (Shs38.6b) for the tournament that will run from February 1-28.

Caf has spiced the upcoming Africa Nations Championship to be held jointly by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania with a significant increase in prize money.

The continental body has announced an increase of the total prize money by 32% to $10.4 (Shs38.6b) for the tournament that will run from February 1-28.

Previously, the winners of the 2020 and 2022 editions Morocco and Senegal received a total prize money of $1.25m (Shs4.64b) and $2m (Shs7.43b) respectively.

However, the new winner this year will fly out of East Africa with slightly more than Shs13b.

“We are excited about the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (“CHAN”) Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda 2024 and have significantly increased the Prize Money of the Winner to USD 3.5 million which is an increase of 75%,” Caf president Patrice Motsepe revealed.

“We have also increased the total Prize Money of the CHAN Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda 2024 to USD 10.4 million which is a 32 % increase,” he revealed further.

Previous breakdown

Caf has not detailed the breakdown of the prize money but the previous Algeria who lost to Senegal in the final received slightly below Shs3b while the losing semifinalists were consoled with about Shs1.9b.

The four sides that failed to progress beyond the quarter-final earned Shs1.49b while Uganda and other teams that finished third in their groups were consoled with Shs1.11b. the last teams in the groups received Shs743m.

Draws set

The confederation has also confirmed that the draws for the Championship will be held next week on Wednesday 15 at the Kenyatta International Conventional Centre in Nairobi, Kenya from 8pm.

The 19 teams will be seeded based on results in the last three editions held in 2022, 2020 and 2018. Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania have been seeded as three hosts and will not be placed into any of the three seeding pots.
