What you need to know:

On Wednesday, the Uganda Cranes coach will unveil his trusted generals to carry the national flag at the home-based players’ tournament, hosted in East Africa for the first time in history

From the Africa Cup of Nations to World Cup qualifiers, Paul Joseph Put has made significant squad announcements since replacing Micho Sredojevic as Uganda Cranes coach in November 2023.

While these tournaments - one of which Uganda has already qualified for - are undoubtedly bigger than the Africa Nations Championship (Chan), this edition of Chan carries its own weight.

It Matters

This Chan 2024 edition, which is exclusive to players that ply their trade domestically, is significant for several reasons.

Put, whose Afcon experience includes guiding Burkina Faso to the 2013 final, will name his Chan squad at the Fufa headquarters in Mengo on Wednesday, fully aware of the expectations.

For the first time in its history, Chan will be co-hosted by three countries. It will also mark East Africa’s debut as hosts, with the event set to run from February 1 to 28, 2025.

Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania secured hosting rights under the collective Pamoja Bid, making it imperative for the three nations not only to deliver a memorable tournament but also to perform on the pitch.

Disturbing Statistic

The Cranes hold the record for the most appearances at Chan finals - six out of seven - followed by DR Congo and Libya with five each.

Yet, while DRC and Libya have claimed two and one titles respectively, Uganda have nothing to show for their efforts.

In fact, the Cranes have never advanced beyond the group stage in their six appearances, a troubling statistic that Put will be eager to change.

As he announces his squad, this challenge will undoubtedly weigh heavily on his mind.

Elsewhere, the Chan 2024 draw will take place on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.
