Kawempe, KQ return to FWSL actions

What you need to know:

Kawempe visit Uganda Martyrs Lubaga, who have also had their last two games pushed, at Bugolobi Coffee grounds on Saturday.

After two weekends of postponed matches due to having players that travelled to Algeria with the national team for friendlies, Kawempe Muslim and Kampala Queens (KQ) are back to Fufa Women Super League (FWSL) action this weekend.

Kawempe visit Uganda Martyrs Lubaga, who have also had their last two games pushed, at Bugolobi Coffee grounds on Saturday.

While midfielder Agnes Nabukenya, leftback Jolly Kobusinge, and captain Phionah Nabulime were the Kawempe players with the Crested Cranes, Martyrs also had Angel Auki Kigongo and Brenda Munyana travel.

Kawempe are unbeaten in the last five league meetings with Martyrs and have won four of those while the latter last beat the defending champions in April 2022.

While Kawempe was in good scoring form during their meetings with Martyrs, the goals have dried up a bit in the recent past. It is a concern coach Ayub Khalifa wanted to address and he has had two weeks of no action to do so.

Still on Saturday, KQ entertain Tooro Queens, who have struggled all season but were boosted by a 2-0 win over fellow strugglers Wakiso Hill last weekend.

KQ had winger Zainah Nandede – who plays as a right back for the national team, goalkeeper Daisy Nakaziro, plus defenders Maureen Kimono, and Shakirah Nankwanga in Algeria.

Olila High School also missed their game last weekend as they had to play one of the three teams with players abroad but they visit Makerere University, who have three on the bounce.

Search for better form

Makerere was previously known for their defensive solidity but have conceded eight in the last three matches.

On Sunday, She Maroons host Lady Doves and will look to bounce back from a loss to Amus College. Amus also make a trip to Nakawa to face She Corporate at Makerere University Business School (Mubs).

Wakiso Hill’s coach Frank Mulindwa got his baptism by fire in a 2-0 loss to Tooro and hopes he can arrest that when he hosts Rines SS at St. Mary’s Stadium Kitende.
