The Electoral Commission will use 38,500 biometric voter verification machines for the General Election.

The commission says that 2,000 units have been purchased while 36,500 have been leased from Smartmatic International. They will be deployed at all the 34,684 polling stations across the country.

EC chairman Simon Byabakama says the machines will deter voter fraud and double voting as well as help voters locate their polling stations.
