As the negative effects of climate change continue to threaten livelihood and safety of global citizens, Ugandans have been urged to intensify their efforts in conserving the environment.

The call was made by North Indian Cultural Association Uganda (NICA) chairperson, Mr Ram Gulshan during a ceremony to mark the World Environment Day at Tembo Steels Factory in Buikwe District on Sunday.

"NICA understands that all resources of nature must be conserved this country," he said.

According to him, environment day comes with crisis from climate change to loss of forest cover and an increase in carbon emission that need immediate attention.

Mr.Kumar Anil, member NICA said they want Uganda to regain its forest cover and urge people, including factory owners to encourage tree planting.

He said trees are important to factories as they help in observing carbon dioxide leading to better environment.

Recently the ministry of water and environment revealed that every Ugandan is required to plant at least 11 trees for the country to restore its forest cover.

The country has about 12.4 percent of forest cover down from 24 Percent in 1990.

During the 2014 climate change summit, Uganda pledged to restore 2.5million hectares of degraded land by 2030.
