Why does my Noah shake when I accelerate?

I have driven a Toyota Noah Liteace Fieldtourer 1999 model close to four years now. However, it has developed some issues of recent.

First, it has cut its power especially when I am driving up hill, it sounds louder than before when I accelerate and sometimes it vibrates.

On inspection, my mechanic discovered that both the front and rear propellers were faulty so I had to replace them but this just led to shaking beneath when in acceleration.

On further inspection, he discovered that the engine mountings were also expired and so I had to replace them as well though this just made a slight improvement because my car still shakes beneath when I accelerate. What is your advice on this because I think my mechanic has run short of ideas?

Ronnie Paul

The issues that cause engine loss of power or poor performance usually have something to do with the ignition system. You need to ensure that your spark plugs, air cleaner and fuel filter are all in good condition.
In case your engine comes with the distributor, then you need to ensure that all ignition cables are okay (or ignition coils if it’s the newer engine).

An inspection of the throttle potentiometer to ensure that it operates smoothly and is not caked with soot would be useful to help restore engine power.

An engine with power loss may shake and have a rattling sound. You may want to rule that out.

Double check with your technician to confirm that the propellor shaft coupling is not damaged. Propellor shafts should be balanced. A propellor shaft with a damaged coupling can vibrate violently especially when you accelerate.

I have a Toyota Premio 1.8 litre and it makes some noise on starting it especially after parking it for some time like overnight and the sound comes from around the timing belt. What could be the problem?

The squeaking noise from your Toyota engine is most likely from the auxiliary V belts. Some cars have one belt while others like your Toyota have two.

These belts run the alternator, water pump, steering pump and air conditioning compressor which are attached to the engine.

The timing belt on the other hand is fitted inside the engine where it helps to synchronise the camshaft and crankshaft movement to avoid serious engine damage when valves and pistons collide.
The V belts will squeak when they are worn out or loosely tensioned. Have them inspected to rectify the problem.

Why does my car have a poor cold start?

My car Subaru Forester has been running normally. However, after travelling to Fort Portal and back in November, it developed a problem of poor starting every morning. It takes like five minutes for the engine to pick up properly.

I was advised to replace the plugs and their wires which I did but this did not help. What could be the problem?
Ahab

While it is prudent to replace the fuel filter as a routine maintenance requirement, it may not be the cause of the hard start.
You may need a computer diagnosis to rule out failure of electronic components of the ignition system such as the coolant temperature sensor or the air flow sensor both of which help the engine computer to detect the temperature of the engine and outside the car in order to effect the cold start enrichment to facilitate prompt cold start ignition.

How is the Pajero GDI fuel comsumption?

I am going to buy a Pajero Mitsubishi GDi from someone but I have some doubts. How is its fuel consumption as compared to the Toyota Premio? Do I go to any mechanic or it has to be specific?
Anonymous

Hello, the GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) Pajero iO is a small, fuel efficient and tough 4WD mini sports utility vehicle (SUV). It’s 2.0 litre petrol engine relies on the GDI fuel delivery techology to provide efficient fuel results.

However, the GDI Pajero iO can’t be compared (apple’s for apples) with the Toyota Premio which is a 2WD saloon car with a lower profile. The mini Pajero if driven fast on the highway will be less fuel efficient in comparison with the Premio. Pajero’s maintenance costs may be higher especially if you inherit one which has been locally abused under a poor maintenance regime.

You need to inspect the one you intend to buy just in case it has issues with its engine emission or fuel delivery systems. Pajero iO’s regular service parts are more expensive. Nevertheless good mechanic is able to maintain these cars.
