Why does my RAV 4 have many problems?

Toyota RAV4 seems to have four major problems: intermittent power steering failure, poor engine performance

What you need to know:

  • Hi Paul, I own an automatic Toyota RAV4 model 1998 but it has a number of issues. The steering becomes stiff after driving for a long day. The mounting makes noise when I change gears to drive or reverse, or even sometimes on drive. At some point you feel the car tyres are wobbling. I think I need to take this car for a full repair. Is there any place you can recommend?

Hello Gabriel, your Toyota RAV4 seems to have four major problems: intermittent power steering failure, poor engine performance, damaged engine, gearbox suspension (mountings) and a possibly misaligned chassis due to the accident mentioned. Intermittent power steering failure often results from the breakdown of the steering hydraulic fluid delivery system, particularly the steering pump.
Your preferred mechanic should consider the condition and quantity of ATF or steering hydraulic fluid in case it is dirty or below the recommended level. This can hinder effective operation of the steering pump. An accident damaged steering box or gearing can also cause the intermittent steering fault although rarely. Poor engine performance requires an investigation of the fuel delivery system and ignition system. In your RAV4 confirm that the long term fuel filter in the engine bay has been renewed at 100,000 kms as this can affect fuel pump lifespan or performance. Spark plugs and high tension leads should be checked to confirm that spark is strong. For the engine and gearbox suspension you only need to replace the insulated mountings and you will be good to go. Buy new ones for a good result.
Your Toyota may have a misaligned chassis frame particularly on the side that had the impact during the accident. Unfortunately affordable chassis and body repair jobs may not always get the chassis alignment correct because you need a chassis linear machine to be sure you have realigned the chassis to sit the suspension and body components correctly and put the car in a good driving condition.
This I consider a more important issue you need to deal with before you find someone to pimp the car as it can endanger the occupants of that car when driving on a highway. You need to discuss this with your mechanic and explore the possibility of finding a good panel beating facility with a chassis linear facility to correctly realign your RAV4.
