Recycle and spend less on your wardrobe

What you need to know:

Mix and match: Too many clothes and nothing to wear? If you are often in this situation then it is time to consider trimming your wardrobe to basics which you can switch up.

With fashion’s revolving nature you know that at least after every season you are going to end up with something new; shoes, bag, skirt and basically a new wardrobe if you are a good fashion shopper.

However, as many trends come and go, many of the clothes you own become redundant or safe and in a word, useless. So, you are left in a state of confusion where you have too many clothes but nothing to wear. This is where minimalism comes in.
According to fashion stylist Johnie Kabunga of Mavo Kampala, minimalism is defined as simple, classic and relaxed styling. It is not a new fashion trend. However, it is fast becoming the ‘go-to-style’ for many young people.

“This is because they have less to spend on clothing, yet they want to look polished and different every time they step out,” Kabunga explains. For this reason, budget dressers stick to a wardrobe of almost nothing to achieve a lot.
This trend is popular with Instagram stars that will recycle clothing so cleverly that you do not notice.

Minimalism goes beyond the ‘budget’ effect. “The clothes are usually simple pieces in versatile colour palettes such as neutrals that can be matched with almost anything,” he adds. They are also usually with clean lines with quiet colours that are timeless to last a lifetime (if possible) in your wardrobe.
The clothes are put together simply in a tone to tone styling technique that draws attention to the final ensemble rather than the individual pieces.

Perhaps the biggest benefit of this trend is that you spend less for a more versatile wardrobe. You can get all the pieces together with little effort. You will also have less clutter and unwanted clothing in your closet. This is why they say less is more.

Stick to the basics
-Find out what you wear most. This could be a favourite colour or style of clothing. Buy those in different colours. Supposing you work at a bank, there is a style of dress you wear most. Take note of that and avoid buying clothes you do not need.

-When shopping, opt for clean shapes for your staples, This could be a range of skirts, shirts, pants and more. They should also be in neutral tones. Blacks and whites are also perfect colours for this. The role of these is to be your starting point as you put looks together.
-For example; a black suit, black pants, blue jeans, a white pencil skirt and a crisp white shirt. With these, you are sure you have something to wear all the time.

-Do the same for accessories. Opt for a work wear bag that is durable for work and simple in appearance that it will never stand out. This should be the bag to carry all week without worrying. The same goes for shoes; simple black pointy heels for work, trainers for working out or outdoor games and pair of oxford flats for days when you have to ‘make an effort.
-Lastly, go out and splurge on a few outstanding pieces such as printed shoes, bags and clothes to match with the staples you own.
