Tips for a good night’s sleep

Failure to sleep at night affects our health and takes a toll on our productivity.

Yet sometimes, all that may be standing between you and a good night’s sleep is a few changes here and there and getting rid of some bad habits. These tips may help you sleep soundly at night.

Get a comfy mattress and pillow
Since we all retire to sleep in a bed, a firm comfortable mattress and pillow makes all the difference between tossing and turning the whole night and a good night’s sleep.

If your mattress is lumpy or sunken in some places or your pillow is too hard or too soft, it is time to invest in another, so that you not only get a good night’s sleep, but also do not wake up feeling sore.

Take a warm bath
Many people find that taking a warm bath in the evening relaxes the body and induces sleep.

Your night clothes matter
If your night dresses or pajamas are too tight the discomfort may rob you of sound sleep.

Similarly, if they are made from polyester, nylon or other synthetic fabrics, our hot and humid climate will cause you to sweat all night and the fabrics to stick to your body and in some cases cause your skin to itch.

It is much better to sleep in night clothes that are made from natural fabrics such as cotton that absorb moisture and will not stick to you when you sweat. Sleeping nude is not a good idea, an unexpected emergency may cause you to jump out of bed and embarrass yourself if there is no time to dress! A visit from a robber, for example!

Avoid heavy meals late at night
Eating supper early in the evenings and avoiding heavy, rich meals late at night, will prevent you suffering from digestion problems. Spicy and acidic foods can also cause heartburn and make you uncomfortable the whole night.

Get regular exercise
Regular exercise in the mornings or afternoons not only helps make you healthy, but also tends to induce faster and deeper sleep when you go to bed at night. Exercising close to bedtime however, may not be a good idea as it may leave you too energised and alert to sleep soundly.

Turn off all lights
Studies have shown that bright lights interfere with our sleep, so set the mood for a good night’s rest by turning off the lights as well as your television and computer.
