Will I conceive again?

Dear doctor:I am 43 years old and a mother of two. In 2013, I got a miscarriage but did not get post care and as a result my tubes got blocked. I only discovered this recently after running a series of tests. Will I ever be able to conceive again? I also get heavy painful periods.
Worried Reader

Dear reader: A miscarriage can happen due to many reasons including problems with strands that carry genes which lead to a foetus that may be abnormal that it dies in the womb and is then lost through a miscarriage.
Whenever a miscarriage takes place, care has to be taken to avoid infections through use of antibiotics and a germ free evacuation of the womb. Failure of which, the womb and the fallopian tubes will be infected leading to tubal blockage risking infertility.
One has to see a gynaecologist for either a nonsurgical procedure called tubal cannulation (if the blockage is near the womb) or surgery to correct the blockage.
Failure of correction may require IVF or adoption. A lot of the said pain and bleeding are part of the infected tubes and probably womb in what is called pelvic inflammatory disease that requires urgent medical attention.
