Kenyans get a dose of their own medicine

Our own Karanja (R) was one of the Kenyans living in Uganda that were left distraught. PHTO BY EDDIE CHICCO

Kampala. Patriotism is inborn and not made and on Saturday the statement came to life after Uganda had overcome Kenya ‘A’ 30-25 to edge the ‘noisy neighbours’ 47-45 to this year’s Elgon Cup at Legends Rugby Club last Saturday. Nation Media Group (NMG)’s Stephen Karanja, born and bred in Nakuru, turned up for the much-anticipated rubber. Our snapper took interest in his presence at the grounds when he joined his fellow Kenyans to support the Lions. They were vociferous right from the start and started singing traditional songs to mock their Ugandan counterparts. When Kenya breezed into an 18-6 lead at the breather, the Kenyan fans literally lifted the roof off Legends as they danced and wined themselves lame. But in sport, it’s never over until the ‘fat old lady’ sings. A 10-minute burst in the second half saw the Cranes seize control at 23-18 before stunning their much-fancied rivals. Quick check and Karanja had cut a forlorn figure together with his comrades as the Cranes made a victory lap and mingled with their partisan fans. Hard luck man! In sport, there is always another chance.
