Kobs test Pirates’ golden generation

Betway Kobs have won six Uganda Cup titles compared to Buzz Black Pirates’ two but the latter have more to show for in the knockout competition over the last two years.
Three Cup final appearances with today’s inclusive have seen Pirates enjoy a better run than fellow 2018 Uganda Cup finalists Kobs. Pirates are Uganda Cup holders while Kobs have not even been in the final since 2015 when they lost 13-10 to Heathens.
Pirates’ achievements last year are good enough to classify the current crop as their golden generation.

They have risen to the top but can they stay put. Today’s final against title hungry Kobs gives them a chance to defend their title and ink themselves into history books. A win for Pirateswill prove that last year’s Cup title was no flash in the pan.

“We are positive about next week`s game and I am confident we shall win it,” said Pirates’ back row Isaac Rujumba after last Saturday’s 23-9 semifinal win against Buffaloes.
The confidence and drive in Rujumba’s assessment says a lot about the rest of the team, the self-belief within the ‘golden generation’ is unwavering.
Kobs on the contrary had a forgettable last campaign but their business in the transfer window speaks volumes. They could not digest the sight of the Sea Robbers popping champagne and they are out to wreck their ship.
The return of Fred Mudoola as coach is a key part of the puzzle. Known for his autocratic style, the former Cranes front row player always demands more from his sides.
“We could have done better and killed off the game in the first 30 minutes but we can’t complain because we are in the final,” is what Mudoola said about his side’s 10-8 semifinal win against Heathens.
The past week has given them time to work on the facets Mudoola felt needed more grit against Heathens as Pirates is known for punishing sloppy play.
