Prof Openjuru appointed Gulu University Vice Chancellor

GULU- Gulu University Chancellor Frederick Kayanja has appointed Prof George Openjuru Ladaah as the new institution’s vice chancellor.
Prof Openjuru will replace Prof Jack Nyeko Pen-Mogi who has been in acting capacity since January 15 last year when his contract expired.
Prof Pen-Mogi led the institution since its inception in 2002.
Prof Openjuru has been the university Deputy Vice Chancellor and a former Dean, School of Distance and Lifelong Learning at Makerere University.
He was recommended by the University Council in July last year after emerging the best candidate among three other candidates who were shortlisted for the top job.
Prof Openjuru confirmed the development while addressing the press at Northern Uganda Media Club in Gulu Town on Wednesday.
He said he comes with wealth of experience in university management given his 25 years of experience working at both Makerere and Gulu universities.
Prof Openjuru pledged to steer the university to great heights and make it a top ranking university at international level.
He said that he would prioritise infrastructure development and the establishment of modern learning through e-learning.
He would assume office at a time lecturers at the university are still on strike demanding Shs700 million from the university management over accumulated extra load and marking allowances.
The lecturers’ strikes prompted the university management to indefinitely suspend the administration of end of Semester One examination to students in December last year.
Prof Pen-Mogi offered to work closely with the incoming Vice Chancellor during the transitional period.
He said choosing Prof Openjuru was based on his capability and vast experience in University management.
“Gulu University has not got some one new, he [Prof Openjuru] was my deputy, and he is well conversant with the management of the university. We expect him to steer the university well,” Prof Pen-Mogi said
Prof Pen-Mogi is expected to officially hand over office and instruments of power to the incoming Vice Chancellor on Saturday 13 during the University’s 13 graduation ceremony. Ends
