On January 26, 1986 National Resistance Army troops entered Kampala under the command of President Museveni and assumed power.

Kampala- The Opposition Uganda Peoples Congress party has said celebrating the January 26 Liberation Day is a waste of time because the reasons the current government waged war are recurring.

Addressing journalists in Kampala yesterday, the UPC vice president, Mr Joseph Bbosa, said NRM can only earn a failure for its 29 years in power, basing on democratic measure.

“Since NRM came to power, it has never organised a free and fair election which is a claim that pushed them to the bush,” Mr Bbosa said.

However, the government spokesperson, Mr Ofwono Opondo, said if there is nothing to celebrate NRM government can celebrate the ouster of UPC from power because since they came into power Uganda is experiencing development.

“Since the celebrations are in Soroti we can celebrate the disarmament of Karimojong who have terrorised Teso sub-region since we came into power,” Mr Opondo said.
On Monday next week, NRM will be celebrating 29 years since they came into power.

NRM captures power
In 1981, 27 Ugandans, led by President Museveni, went to the bush claiming the elections were rigged in favour of UPC and to fight for an end to the massacres that were taking place in the country at the time.
On January 26, 1986 National Resistance Army troops entered Kampala under the command of President Museveni and assumed power.

They had overthrown the six-months military regime of Tito Okello which had earlier overthrown the government of Milton Obote in 1985.
