Court orders police to exhume student’s body

Kyotera- A court in Kalisizo has ordered police to exhume the body of a student which was buried at Kasensero Landing Site, in Rakai District last week.

Nathan Lutaaya, 18, was a First Year student at Bikiira Teachers’ Collage.  He was recently found dead on the shores of Lake Victoria.

His body was on Tuesday last week buried at Kansensero Landing Site on the orders of police officers at Kasensero Police Station since nobody claimed it.

However, Ms Joy Namboozo, the Kalisizo Grade I Magistrate on Monday ordered the exhumation of the body following Mr Godfrey Ssemwanga, a resident of Lwendawula, Ddwaniro Sub-county in Rakai District claimed it.

On June 4, according to Mr Ssemwanga, his son left home to go to school. He reportedly used a boda boda.

However, Mr Ssemwanga was two days later informed that his son was not at the college.

He filed a missing person case at Kyotera Police.

He later received information that a body that had been buried at Kasensero Landing Site.

He said when he travelled to the landing site and observed pictures of the body that were shot by police officers, he confirmed that it was that of his missing son.

Mr Ssemwanga explains that his request to police to allow him exhume the body was rejected. He was advised to secure a court order.

According to Mr Lameck Kigozi, the Southern Region Police spokesperson, they discovered a suitcase containing Lutaaya’s personal items at Kyapa trading centre.

 He said two people have been arrested as investigations continue.

According to Mr Kigozi, the body will be taken to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for a post-mortem before being handled over to the family for burial.
