Five people die in accidents every day, says police

KAMPALA. Police statistics for the last six weeks show that five people die in accidents every day.
The statistics released on Monday, June 20, 2017 show that 223 people have died in six weeks, meaning an average of 36 people lost life every week and five people per day.
While addressing the media, Mr Charles Ssebambulidde, traffic police spokesperson, said a total of 1,024 accidents were recorded in the four weeks of May whereas 129 accidents have so far been recorded in the two weeks of June.

“A total of 877 victims were involved in the May accidents of which 170 died and 707 were seriously injured. In the first half of June we recorded 127 victims and of these 53 died whereas 74 sustained serious injuries,” Mr Ssebambulidde said.
Police explained that the accidents recorded in the six weeks have claimed 85 pedestrians, 60 motorcyclists, 14 pedal cyclists, 48 passengers and 16 drivers totaling to 223 people who lost life between May and June.

“Most of the pedestrians have been killed and injured by motorcyclists who do not respect traffic laws even when they meet pedestrians at Zebra crossings. Others have been knocked in villages,” Mr Ssebambulidde said.

This came barely five days after three civilians and a police officer had been killed in two separate accidents that occurred on Entebbe Road and in Hoima Municipality.
Police said the Entebbe Road accident happened at Namasuba killing, three people on spot. This involved two minibuses Reg No UAT 614G and UAM 977F plus a Harrier Reg No UAM 503S which were all heading to Kajjansi.

On the same day, a police officer was killed in a fatal accident that occurred at Kyesiiga East Cell, Bujumbura Division, in Hoima Municipality. The dead police officer was identified as Cpl Francis Onekalit who died on the spot whereas his colleague Sam Marura survived with broken limbs and was admitted at Hoima Referral Hospital.

Road carnage also snatched Lord Mayor Eria Lukwago’s Personal Assistant, Godfrey Mayanja. Mayanja met his death at 10am in Kyengera Town Council where crashed by a speeding Milk Tank from Mbarara Municipality heading to Kampala City.
