Health ministry orders contractor to produce new plan

Ministry of Health officials have ordered Prism, the company in charge of constructing new wards and renovation of Moyo Hospital, to produce new plans.

The order comes after local authorities and ministry officials were not pleased with the progress of the work at the hospital.

The National Focal Person for Infrastructures in Ministry of Health, Mr Francis Wakabi, tasked the company officials to produce new work plan with details of new outlook of the wards.
He said the office of the president has already directed that the work of renovating the hospital should be completed by June 2015.

Mr Maurice Kertho, the operations manager Prism construction company limited, said they were ready to complete the work in time. He said there was need for cooperation and not sabotage of the project by some people, whom he did not name. The renovation started in February but the work has been so far marred by allegations of compromised quality, delay in work progress and worker strikes over pay.

The major area of renovation include the out-patient’s department and general wards. Many of the areas in the wards had cracked walls, falling ceilings which were done during the Obote regime.

The construction company is operating under ministry of health with support from the World Bank. The ministry of health has committed about Shs10b for the project. The former LC5 chairman, Mr Peter Iku Dolo, said the construction of new wards would relieve patients from congestion. He said other partners should also come in to complete other areas which need renovation.
