Police boss suspends SSP Omalla over election offenses

Kampala.
The Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura has suspended Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Sam Omalla who has been the Deputy Commander Field force unit zonal commander, Busoga and Masaba regions.
Omalla previously the Kampala field force commander is known for his role in quelling the 2011 walk-to-work and other public riots and protests in Kampala.

Mr Omalla together with four other officers is being investigated for election related offenses in the recently concluded polls.
In a letter dated June 6, Gen Kayihura notes that, “To ensure that the ongoing investigations into allegations of misconduct by police officers in Namutumba and Tororo districts during the recently concluded national elections are not interfered with, the following officers are suspended.”

The suspension follows a visit by the police boss to Namutumba District last month where he apologised to the people of Bukono County constituency for the decision by the police there to fire live bullets and teargas during the NRM primaries in October last year.

“Teargas is for the people of Kampala, not for local people like you. We are very sorry for the teargas and as the Inspector General of Police, I would like to say we are sorry for that,” Gen Kayihura told the locals.

Other suspended officers include; Senior Superintendent of Police Chemonges Seiko who has been the Busoga east region police commander, Superintendent of Police Bashir Sempala – the District police commander - Namutumba and Inspector of Police, Inspector of Police Henry Mugoda, the Officer in Charge- Kibaale sub-county-Namutumba and a one Kevin Akit of the same station.
