Multiplex staff demonstrate over delayed pay

KAMPALA

The subordinate staff of multiplex limited a company in charge of management and control of street parking in Kampala on Tuesday went on strike over delayed payment.
The workers from the different sections, including ticket sellers, field reporters and enforcement team put down their tools and gathered at the company’s head offices in Nakasero.
The workers claim they have not been paid for the last two months yet they had not received any official communication from the administration explaining the delay.
“I wake up every morning and come to work under harsh conditions like sunshine, coldness, rain and pressure from supervisors. I wonder why we cannot be paid our peanut salary in time,” Lucy Nyamata a parking conductor bitterly complained.
Besides salary, some staffs members raised concerns about their National Social Security Funds (NSSF) that has not been emitted for the last five years.
“I have been working for this company for over five years. But I have never got a single coin on my NSSF account yet they charge me Shs10, 000 every month. Every time I go to NSSF offices, they tell me that no money has ever been sent to my account,” said Mr Moses Okanya, an enforcement assistant.
Mr Okanya added that despite their effort to follow up on the matter with the accounts department, their employer is yet to relent.
The Project Manager Eldad Kansiime who spoke to the demonstrators acknowledged that it was the management’s fault for not paying workers in time.
“First I want to accept that it is our fault to delay your salary. However, it is not our plan but because of some unavoidable circumstances. We promise we shall do our best to address the problem including your NSSF money,” Mr Kansiime said.
Mr Kansiime promised that the company was going to pay all staffs by close of business, today. Meanwhile the officer in charge of Central Police Station (CPS) Mr Aron Baguma said it was the workers’ right to stage a non-violent demonstration.
