The Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre and NRM deputy spokesperson Mr Ofwono Opondo has ridiculed former prime minister Amama Mbabazi challenging him to produce evidence of support for his candidature.

Mr Opondo was responding to a declaration by Amama Mbabazi who had earlier told journalists at a media conference at his residence in Kololo that he will not seek to stand as flag bearer for the ruling NRM party but maintained he will contest as a presidential candidate in next year’s elections.

"Mbabazi does not have any credible following. I task him to name any member of parliament in support of his ambitions. Who will then campaign for him?" Mr Opondo said.

"He (Mbabazi) has no support. He rides on Museveni's support, even in his native Kinkizi he has no support. He is cooked meat, we will have him for dinner,” Mr Opondo added.

Mr Opondo mocked Mbabazi with a Shs1m donation as a start- up for his campaign fund.

The communications officer for Mbabazi campaign team Josephine Mayanja Nkangi could not be reached for comment as she did not pick her phone.

Earlier during a press conference, Mbabazi said he will not contest for presidency on the NRM ticket on grounds that the party primaries are illegal.

“I’m not leaving NRM. I’m just not running on the NRM ticket. I am going to start a journey and at the end of this journey, I'll be president of Uganda. I have decided that I will not stand within NRM and when the time comes I will be nominated as Presidential candidate,” he told journalists at his residence in Kololo.
