Policemen shoot three-year-old girl dead

MITYANA- As Ugandans mourn the death of the Assistant Inspector General of Police Felix Kaweesi, his driver and bodyguard who were gunned down on Friday, policemen attached to the Flying Squad have shot and killed a juvenile in Mityana District.

 Viola Nakuwuka,3, was on the back of her mother, Ms Diana Nabakooza a resident of Guluma village, Butayunja Sub county, Mityana District, who was on her way home when three policemen fired bullets that killed her.

 Speaking to Daily Monitor on Monday, the Regional Police Commander Fred Kigima confirmed the death of Nakawuka saying the minor’s mother and another resident identified as Ivan Kito who sustained injuries were taken to Mityana Hospital to receive treatment.

 Mr Kigima said that the Flying Squad policemen acted on their own and the police are hunting for them.

 “We have started instant investigations and so far, we have identified some, although we cannot disclose their names now,” Mr Kigima said.

 According to an eyewitness who preferred being anonymous, it was Mr Kalumba, a village witchdoctor who had called the alleged policemen to protect from residents who wanted to lynch him.

 Mityana District chairperson Mr Joseph Luzige, who went to the scene after the shooting appealed to residents to remain peaceful as police investigates the matter.
