Heavy police deployment in Mbale ahead age limit ruling

Police have deployed heavily in Mbale District in eastern Uganda ahead of the long awaited age limit ruling at Mbale High Court.
The five-judge panel led by Deputy Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo, any time from now delivers judgment on the presidential age limit petition.
The other justices are; Remmy Kasule, Elizabeth Musoke, Cheborion Barishaki and Kenneth Kakuru.
On Tuesday evening, over six military trucks full of riot police officers made their way into Mbale town, driving through Republic Street at about 8pm as curious residents looked on.
The Elgon Police Spokesperson, Mr Suwed Manshur, said the heavy police deployment is to ensure that court conducts its proceedings without interference.
“This is to ensure that court proceedings are not disrupted,” he said, adding that police will make sure that there is no chaos caused during and after age limit ruling.
He added that all major roads, like Republic Street and Uhuru lane, leading to Mbale High Court have been closed.
However, the mood in Mbale town remains calm as residents are seen going about their daily routine work.
Mr Robert Magomu, one of the residents told Daily Monitor that they are eagerly waiting for the judges’ decision.
“We are anxiously waiting for the ruling from the judges,” he said.
At court, a tent has been erected in the parking lot to allow the general public follow the court proceedings on giant screens and loud speakers.
