Student murdered over stolen school bag

Anselm Niwahereza, a senior two student of Nyaruhanga High School in Murole Town council Rubanda was on Tuesday evening murdered by a suspected mob of students from the neighboring Rubanda High School.
The Rubanda High School students accused the 15-year-old of stealing a school bag from one of their colleagues.

The Rubanda District Police Commander Ramathan Tai said the deceased is a resident of Rwamugasha village in Nyamweru Sub county Rubanda District. He added that another student of the same school that is yet to be identified was seriously injured in the scuffle and is currently admitted at Junamagara health center located in Murole Town council.

Local residents said that the students of Rubanda High School stormed Nyaruhanga High School armed with sticks and stones and started beating the deceased that died on spot before police came in and saved the situation before any further destruction could be made.

The father to the deceased student, Mr Gad Ngabirano expressed sorrow about the loss of his son and asked the administration of both schools to meet the burial expenses of his deceased son.

The Mr Tai said that he has deployed police men at both schools to keep law and order and that investigations into the matter will continue. He said that the body of the deceased was taken to Kabale regional referral hospital for postmortem.

The head teacher at Nyaruhanga High School, Robert Katebarirwe, said that it was an unfortunate incident and the school administration, on July 25, resolved to send away all the students as a way of cooling the situation.

“The candidates shall report back on Saturday to prepare for their mock examinations that were scheduled to be on Monday next week, and the rest shall come back in phases as the school administration scrutinizes them,” Mr Katebarirwe said.

The headmaster for Rubanda High School, James Tindimwebwa, said that the situation at his school was calm and the students were busy in their classrooms reading. He also said that they are planning to send away all the students to their respective homes on July 26 to cool the tempers.
He added that the school administration agreed to extend some help to the family of the deceased student in meeting the burial expenses.
