UCU student found dead in swimming pool

Mbarara. Police in Mbarara District are investigating circumstances under which a student of Uganda Christian University, (UCU) Mukono, died in a swimming pool at Big Fun Entertainment, a recreational centre in the upscale Booma area in Mbarara Town.
Victor Mbuga’s body was found in the swimming pool by a cleaner on Thursday morning. The cleaner informed the management who notified police. Mbuga, 24, was a third year student at UCU in Mukono studying International Business.

His sister Christine Kyohairwe told the press that he left their home in Rwebikoona in Kamukuzi Division at midday on Wednesday with his friends and never returned.
“We called his friends but they didn’t answer our repeated phone calls. We learnt today (Thursday) that his body was found in a swimming pool,” Ms Kohairwe said sobbing.

The family was informed about his death by police. Ms Kyohairwe added that Mbuga knew how to swim and that it was puzzling that he could have drowned.
The district police officer in charge of criminal investigations, Mr Chiriga Taban, said police were investigating the death.
“Through post-mortem we shall be able to establish how he died,” Mr Chiriga said.

He confirmed Mbuga was in the company of other people. “We are trying to find out the circumstances under which they left behind (at the swimming pool) a friend they had gone with,” he said.
Two of the people who were with Mbuga have been arrested. The deceased’s mother, Ms Florence Kagwa, said they suspect foul play in her son’s death.
Mr Chiriga appealed to the management of Big Fun Entertainment to always register every customer who goes to the swimming pool. He said there was no proper registration of the visitors. The centre’s manager, Mr Gilbert Buyinza, declined to comment on the incident.
