Violent crime rocks Mityana, Mubende

Kampala- Mityana and Mubende districts have been rocked by violent crime involving guns within a space of 10 days this month, prompting police to increase patrols and intelligence operations there.

At least 11 people have been killed since December 6. The latest incident was reported in Bamunanika in Mityana Municipality at dawn yesterday when criminals attacked a coffee factory and killed two people.

The deceased were identified as Samuel Ssekitoleko, the factory manager, and Frank Ddumba, a junior worker.
Mr Emmanuel Viga from Star React Security Group who was guarding the factory, was injured in the attack.

Mr Norbert Ochom, the police spokesperson for Wamala region, said the suspects used rudimentary weapons such as machetes and other sharp objects to carry out the attack before they took off with Shs8m from the factory.

“Although we have not made any arrests, we have been able to recover the tools the suspects used. They will be taken for analysis to aid our investigations,” Mr Ochom said yesterday.
In another incident on Friday, four people of the same family were hacked to death at Kyampisi Village, Kabuki Parish, Kabalinga Sub-county, in the neighbouring Mubende District.

The deceased were identified as Specioza Nalugwa, 55, and her three grandchildren Sarah Mamata, 17, Fred Musasizi, 2, and Specioza Nakacwa, 4.

Mr Ochom said detectives arrested Nalugwa’s son-in-law as a suspect.
“The son-in-law has often accused Nalugwa of causing misunderstanding in their home. In fact, upon arrest, we searched his house and found a blood-stained jacket and an axe. His crime record is also a factor for consideration because he is a former convict of murder,” he said.

On December 10, gunmen raided Sena Petrol Station at Kikandwa Trading Centre in Kalwana Sub-county in Mubende and shot dead the pump attendant. No suspect has been arrested.

On the same day, an armed man raided a bar and shot dead two brothers at Nalyamagonja in Kalangalo village in Mityana.

A day later, a body of unidentified man was found dumped in a swamp at Bakijulula in Mubende Municipality.

He is believed to have been strangled.
Residents told police that he was dumped by men in a Toyota Premio, but they were unable to read its registration number plate before it sped off.
