Musagala inks personal mark

Musagala is getting his season on track with impressive displays.

Kampala- Ronald Musagala inked a new personal best (PB) while winning the men’s 5000m race at the Nijmegen Global Meet in Netherlands on Wednesday evening.

Only three days after he rewrote the 1500m national record of 3:35.02 at the IAAF FBK Games in Hengelo, Musagala beat 23 others over the 12-and-half-lap race in 13 minutes and 24.41 seconds.
“It was a nice run,” a thrilled Musagala told Daily Monitor. “I am really enjoying this moment in my career.” This was his first attempt at a long distance event. “I used to run 10000m before I switched to middle-distances (800m and 1500m).” But the 22-year-old missed hitting the Beijing World Athletics Championships qualification mark by 1.41 seconds.

In 800m, Musagala’s training partner, Abu Mayanja, posted 1:48.98 to take fifth place in his first-ever international appearance. Another Ugandan Denis Opio acted as the pacesetter in the two-lap race.

Elsewhere, Phillip Kipyeko (13:45.53) finished 14th over 5,000m at the IAAF Golden Spike Meet in Ostrava. Ethiopian Dejen Gebremeskel (13:23.72) won the race.
