KAMPALA. Uganda’s bad luck at the Aiba World Championships once again stuck out like the proverbial sore thumb when 2014 Commonwealth bronze medallist Fazil Juma Kaggwa was disqualified for being overweight just yesterday.
Since this year, Kaggwa has struggled to make the lightly weight and his late arrival in Doha, Qatar made the matters worse.
The three boxers, Coach Dick Katende and two federation officials left Kampala Sunday night and reached Doha just on time for the mandatory weigh-in, leaving Kaggwa with hardly any chances to check his usually stubborn pounds.
With heavyweight Mike Ssekabembe also evading the tournament earlier for the World Military Games in Korea, Team Uganda’s slim hopes, now lay with bantamweight Rogers Ssemitala, and lightweight Abdul Hassan, who launch their pursuit for their Olympics dream tomorrow.
The Bombers’ trip almost flopped until Sunday when President Museveni offered each a ticket and $2520 as upkeep and accommodation for the event which doubles as an Olympics qualifier.
