Sky is the limit for superb She Cranes

There is little doubt that the She Cranes are getting better as yesterday’s 57-37 defeat of Scotland showed at the Gold Coast Convention Centre.
The girls did the job they had to do in securing victory over the Scots hours after unbeaten England had done them the mighty favour of beating New Zealand.
But they required a winning margin of more than 40 points to sneak through to the next stage, and could only manage to beat the Scots by 20.
“Our confidence continues to grow,” Goal Shooter Peace Proscovia said after the win.
“We are proud of our contribution at the Commonwealth Games and will learn from this experience.”

Passionate support
Uganda won all quarters after converting 57 of 64 shots with Peace Proscovia shooting 94 per cent.
Yet again the She Cranes were driven on by a boisterous crowd that included Members of Parliament Anita Among, Hamson Obua, Michael Tusiime and Peter Ogwang, former Fufa president Lawrence Mulindwa, sports minister Charles Bakkabulindi, NCS chairman John Bosco Onyik, UOC president William Blick and members of the Ugandan community living in Australia.
Such has been the passionate support accorded to the girls that Uganda has been famed both for the netball talent and vociferous support exhibited throughout the games.
The team manager Jocelyn Ucanda noted that She Cranes are living a dream.
“This has been a success story thanks to the passion and hard work of every one,” she intimated. “The president of the International Netball Federation said that ‘Uganda shall be world number one in two years’ and so we must aim high.”
The She Cranes will hope that the lessons picked from Gold Coast stand them in good stead for the 2019 World Cup to be hosted in Liverpool next year.

Hopes evaporated
Meanwhile boxer Regarn Simbwa’s medal hopes evaporated in thin air after he was outclassed by Welshman Sammy Lee at Oxenford Studios in the 81kg category.
Lee asserted himself early despite a reach disadvantage and connected better and powerfully.
Simbwa’s enjoyed a much better second round and finished it the stronger with Lee’s legs turning wobbly – the latter was only saved by the closing bell of the round.
But Lee returned stronger in the third to advance to the semi-finals.
Uganda’s lone remaining boxer is now Juma Miiro in the 46-49kgs.
