It has been hailed as football’s answer to lack of competition in the top flight league: eight top teams playing three high-energy games with many of Uganda’s title contenders competing while two newly promoted sides get a feel of what to expect in an enticing knockout format.

That may be wishful thinking, but there are certainly high hopes that the new Pilsner Super 8 concept will shake up Uganda’s football following the final at Wankulukuku yesterday.

The end-game by Fufa is to have more competitions on the calendar with the Pilsner Super 8 attracting a Shs90m sponsorship from the beer makers. Some decent crowds and a television deal would be nice, too on top of increasing the cash prize.
It is quite an ambition for what is an inherently a potential and Mike Mutebi, the manager KCCA FC, who played the final with Onduparaka, has seen the future.

“This is what I have been asking for. Here is a chance for the top teams to gauge themselves competitively in pre-season,” Mutebi said. According to Mutebi, the domestic league badly needs a makeover. With the exception of a few teams, match attendances at league games have been low.
