Mistakes your man is making

Before you send that man out through the door, or step out with him, make sure he will represent you well; help him nail that dress code. photos by abubaker lubowa.

What you need to know:

Men’s fashion. You know what they say; when he steps out, he reflects on your effort in his life. What fashion mistakes could he be making therefore?

Why are we bothering you with your man’s fashion sense? Well, unfortunately, as a couple, you become each other’s keepers. You know how everyone will be thinking of you when they see your man wearing dirty or creased clothes? It is worse when he shows up for weddings draped in orange from head to toe. “Who’s the woman in his life?” is what will be on everyone’s mind.

If there is a man in your life that you care enough about to be embarrassed by therefore, here are a few men’s fashion facts you need to know and help him out;

•Wearing white socks for all occasions
In fashion, it is the smallest details that speak volumes of the wearer. So, socks maybe just socks down there, but they say a whole lot about a man. White socks are appropriate for working out and that is that.

•Confusing sneakers and exercise shoes
I don’t know how to quite explain the difference because these are both exercise shoes. Thing is the thick-soled converse that he wears to the gym should not make double as his casual shoes.

•Untucking dress shirts that need to be tucked
Basic rule: If the shirt curves at the bottom it should be tucked in. Otherwise, he’ll look boxy and a bit slovenly, so do him a solid and make sure he knows what’s up.

•Not matching shoes to his belt
Sorry guys, this must be a nagging little detail but it still holds true that your shoes should match your shoes in colour and purpose. They don’t have to be super matchy, but if he is wearing brown shoes, a brown belt is needed. Also, note that there is difference between casual and formal belts.

•Overly matching
This is an example of a good tip gone bad. Yes, matching is important, but that doesn’t mean everything has to be in the same pattern or colour.
So the next time he throws on an outfit like this, nudge him to think again about his choices.

•Ill-fitting suits, in general
Too big is bad. Too small is worse. Do yourself a favour and read this, then help a brother out.

•Refusing to wear shorts in the correct length/fit
Like pants, baggy is no good and neither is ball-suffocating tight. Plus, too short and everyone can see the goods, too long and he looks like he stole his mother’s capris. Right at or above the knee is the sweet spot.

•Buying sunglasses that aren’t right for his face shape
The same rules that apply to the women about eyewear apply to the men. If it makes him look worse, it is not the right pair for his face shape.
