Can I buy a locally used Mitsubishi GDi

What you need to know:

  • Neglecting the air intake system and air filter cleanliness damages the air flow sensor and throttle potentiometer. These components will affect or curtail the GDi engine performance.
  • There are a number of good mechanics which can fix that car.

Hello Paul, my name is Ivan. I read your articles in the Daily Monitor motoring pages. I would like to buy a locally used Mitsubishi GDi but everyone is advising me against that decision. They say those cars are troublesome, complicated and hard to fix. Do you recommend that I buy it and who can fix it?

Hello Ivan, the Pajero GDi (like any other used brand) are not bad as such rather it is the way they are serviced or maintained that makes them unreliable.

Before purchase procure a thorough technical inspection and computor diagnosis to rule out costly repair needs. If the car is found to be in good running condition, you can go ahead and buy it. The Gasoline Direct Injection (GDi) is an efficient engine fuel delivery technology that delivers gasoline from a high pressure common line directly into each cylinder.

This fuel system is very efficient. Most modern car manufacturers build engines with gasoline direct injection. Mercedes call it CGi (Charged Gasoline injection), VW call it FSi (fuel stratified injection) and Toyota call it D4 (direct four).

This system relies on precision of air and fuel ratios to deliver prompt ignition, instantaneous power as well as excellent fuel economy. Failure to maintain the fuel system (fuel filter service and fuelling with premium fuel system cleaning fuels) causes damage of the GDi high pressure pump and fuel injectors.

Neglecting the air intake system and air filter cleanliness damages the air flow sensor and throttle potentiometer. These components will affect or curtail the GDi engine performance.
