What family planning method controls weight gain?

I am 90+ kg in weight. I have been getting pregnant and aborting since I fear to use any family planning method for fear of adding weight. What can I do? Does a coil increase weight? Linda

Dear Linda,
Family planning requires both husband and wife to visit a family planning clinic together for informed advice which they can use to choose the type of family planning suitable for them.
In Uganda, the Intra Uterine contraceptive Device (IUCD) that is used most is the copper T which can cause minor side effects including cramps when in periods or not or more bleeding. The least used type here, has a hormone (levonorgestrel intrauterine system).
Although it may reduce cramps, it may cause weight gain in a few people.
Women are advised not to use the copper T if they have unexplained vaginal bleeding (are likely to be having cancer of the cervix or womb), are likely to be pregnant, or have acute or chronic pelvic infections. Many women who claim that they cannot use the copper T because of allergy to copper actually have allergy to nickel gas.
Please visit your family planning clinic for more advice but a copper T may be most appropriate for you since the hormonal contraceptives are likely to increase your weight.
