Five-bedroom house on 50 by 70ft plot

The artistic impression of the house plan.

What you need to know:

This house design can work on a small plot and still give room for a green outdoor.

Having a big house on a small portion of land is magical. This five bedroom house sits on a 50 by 70ft plot of land occupying quarter of a 50 by 100ft piece of land. Seraphino Junior, the architect behind this plan, says it gives you enough circulation and compound space.

The feature
“The unique thing about this house is that its main concept is natural lighting. This house is made of glass, giving it full time glamour from the sun hence letting in natural light by all means. In a way, this saves use of energy as bulbs are not on during day and days when the moon is bright,” he notes.

He adds that the use of glass also gives the building a modern touch and appearance.
He, however, adds that the glasses are limited to the front rooms, while the behind ones are made of concrete.

It is made of a ground floor and the first floor. The ground floor has two bedrooms with an attachment of a swimming pool on the second bedroom, while the rest of the rooms are on the first floor. “There is a big garage that can accommodate two cars. This modern structure is ideal for house parties and other functions as its rooms are big enough,” he notes.

Balconies
The house has two balconies- one on the master bedroom and the other on the meeting place/sitting room. These give comfort to the occupants as in case the sitting room balcony is occupied, you could use the upper balcony.

Costs
On this house, paint costs are minimised because half of the house is made of glass and does not need paint. The house is estimated to cost about Shs400m. However, only a quantity surveyor can give you the exact figures, which depend on the type of finishing and other variables.

Interior
Dorothy Nabatanzi, an interior designer, notes that this is a classy house and, therefore, needs a classy interior touch. The curtains should match the house colour theme to complement the glass.
You could choose bold and elegant colours such as brown, cream, and grey.
Wood look tiles
“Wood look tiles depict class in a home, one could opt for them as well as white tiles, what will enhance the glamour in the house,” she adds.

Ceiling accessories
Nabatanzi adds that chandeliers and decorative lamps will also spice up the look.
The colours and design should match the house theme colour. Lamps could be placed on the balconies to add a great look, especially at night.
“Galvanised ceiling would be a great choice for this house since its classy and beautiful, there are a variety of designs and your choice matters. Alternatively, you can have them made in the usual style and decorate them to bring out the unique look,” she notes.

Garden
You can have plants placed on the balconies to spruce up the appearance. These can be placed on the corners or on the edges.
Sharon Amoding, a landscaper, notes that this house leaves a big portion for the garden, and therefore, gives the owner the liberty to design it as much as they can.
“Bring on the magic with grass, most people are opting for pavers but nothing makes a home beautiful than grass, this can be accompanied by beautiful trees in the compound to create a shade and beauty at the same time,” she says.

Amoding notes that shady gardens would also be a great option for such a house.
She adds that you can also opt for urban gardening where food is planted in beautifully designed vessels or commercial gardening where fruit trees can be incorporated in the garden to bring in beauty and money.

All kinds of lamps, chandeliers and decorative bulbs can be found in kiyembe Kampala ranging from Shs50,000 to Shs100,000 to Shs200,000 and above depending on the type and make you want. Your bargaining power and the amount you are taking also matters.
Plants/flowers range from Shs5,000 to Shs100,000 depending on your choice. Old tree plants are expensive compared to young ones.

Utlising a small garden
Build a vertical planter
Not only does this DIY take up less surface area than multiple pots would, but it can also serve as a privacy fence for nosy neighbours.

Pretty up a pallet
Attach clay pots to a pallet with nails and stainless steel cable ties for a living art display that keeps your rosemary and basil at the ready. Space out the pots so your plants have room to grow.

Pick easy foliage
With more foliage than flowers, a garden full of greenery is not only ultra low-maintenance, but also more bang for your buck. Petalless plants such as ghost bramble, do not need deadheading and leaves last longer than briefly blooming blossoms.
