BUHWEJU. The 2006 Commonwealth steeplechase gold medalist Docus Inzikuru said Buhweju District in western Uganda could be the next athletics talent hub in the country after Kapchorwa in Eastern Uganda.
Inzikuru was impressed by athletes in the fourth edition of Buhweju mountain run as they endured the challenging hilly sections of 10km challenge. This was won by 12-year-old Didas Kamugisha in the junior category beating his closest contender Vincent Mwijukye in second position.
“I have seen promising talent here. The terrain is favourable and good for long distance runners just like Kapchorwa. The next Inzikuru or Kiprotich could come from here. Athletics officials should keep encouraging these young boys and girls,” Inzikuru said her face lit with excitement.
Inzikuru who was accompanied by her husband and their three months-old daughter, promised to offer free athletics training to Western Uganda as a whole starting December. The chairman Buhweju District Athletics Association Dan Tamwesigire the chief organiser of Buhweju Mountain run annual event, asked government to assist the district in the establishment of a high altitude training centre in Buhweju, whose establishment is in initial stages after securing land.
The event was presided over by the Commissioner Physical Education in the ministry of Education and Sports Omara Apita, who represented Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni.
Apita hailed district athletics association for using the natural terrain to groom future athletics stars, and promised to forward their high altitude training center quest.
A team of 20 athletes was selected to represent the district at this year’s edition of the national mountain run in Kapchorwa next month.
