KAMPALA- Several people have been taken to Mulago National Referral Hospital in critical condition following an accident that happened at traffic lights near Kira Road Police Station on Wednesday evening.

A truck, Reg. No UAA 497L which was travelling from Ntinda rammed into several cars that were waiting at the traffic lights.

Mr Luke Owoyesigire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson said they are waiting for a report from Mulago Hospital to ascertain the number of victims.

“We can’t give any number of deaths now because we are not doctors. As of now, we are waiting to see what report Mulago gives us about the deaths. We can take it for now that these people were just unconscious,” Mr Owoyesigire said.

The cars that were hit included two commuter taxis , two saloon cars plus a bus belonging to Pioneer Bus Company.

Mr Moses Ssempijja whose shirt was covered with blood of the victims said he recovered four dead bodies of two men and two children.

He said that in addition to the two children were retrieved from another taxi whose driver and conductor died on the spot.

“I can say that a total of about 10 people died in this accident. You cannot tell me that people whose heads had been squeezed beyond recognition can survive,” Mr Ssempijja said.

Daily Monitor could not independently verify this information since Mulago Hospital is yet to release a report to police.

Ms Mariam Nabawa who survived the accident with minor injuries said the whole incident happened in an unexpected way and she was thankful to God for sparing her life.

“We could not help ourselves, it all happened very fast. A woman who was seated close to me got stuck in the next chair and by the time they came to save us, I don’t think she was still alive,” Ms Nabawa said.

This is not the first time such an incident is happening. In April last year, a lorry knocked three cars

at Nakawa traffic lights injuring several people.
