Police in Mbale District have arrested a businessman for allegedly attempting to bribe the Director of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence (CIID) in Elgon region with Shs500,000.

The 36-year-old is a resident of senior quarters in Wanale division, Mbale municipality.

The acting Elgon regional Police Spokesperson, Mr Robert Tukei confirmed the arrest saying the suspect was offering a bribe of Shs500,000 to ASP Christopher Ucamgiu to facilitate the release of two suspects who were arrested last week while in possession of leopard, crocodile skins.

“We arrested him for attempting to bribe a regional CID officer in order to secure a bond for his two colleagues,” Mr Tukei said.

Mr Ucamgiu told this reporter on Wednesday that the suspect approached him with a bribe amounting to Shs500, 000 so that he could kill the case.

"I decided to arrest him for attempting to offer a bribe to me, so that I kill the case," he said.
