Travellers, shoppers take centre stage as Xmas starts

KAMPALA. The festive season is here again. It is the season many traders make a killing from the boost in number of people shopping.
It is the season Christians travel in droves up-country to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with their relatives.

In Kampala, the holiday mood has kicked off in full blast. Yesterday, motorists spent several hours in jam as several people struggled to shop or travel up-country.

A visit by this publication to Luwum Street, Namirembe Road, Nakivubo Road and William Street, among others, found cars in traffic gridlock for hours as hundreds of people rushed with errands ahead of Christmas.

Verandahs and entrances of shopping malls were packed with merchandise ranging from clothes, shoes, Christmas trees and confectioneries.
Most crowded places are Ham Shopping Mall, Mukwano Arcade Shopping Mall and other supermarkets around downtown that are giving Christmas discounts for their merchandise.
Mr Solomon Ashaba, a trader in downtown dealing in ladies’ shoes, says whenever it is Christmas time, they are always excited because they know many people will be shopping in large quantities.
