Cranes players miss Tuesday training over unpaid bonuses

Sébastien Desabre, the Cranes coach

CAIRO- Seventy-two hours before Uganda play Senegal in the round of 16 Africa Cup of Nations match, the news from Cranes camp is less inspiring.

News indicates that players refused to board the bus for training at Arab Contractors Stadium in Cairo on Tuesday.

A group of Uganda and foreign journalists, plus the country's Minister of Sports Charles Bakabulindi waited in vain at the training venue.

Information would later come in that the players were going to train from the gym.

But it later turned out the players were protesting their unpaid bonuses amounting to Sh22 million ( $6,000) for beating DRC and drawing with Zimbabwe.

Before the tournament kickoff Daily Monitor reported that the players were promised Sh189 million ($50,000) each for lifting the trophy while a win was guaranteed Sh14.7 million ($4000) and a draw Sh7.3 million ($2,000).

Daily Monitor has confirmed from a number of players that they refused to train because of bonuses.
