DP has no room for political snakes, says Mao

Mr Norbert Mao (L) and singer Joseph  Mayanja aka Chameleon.

KAMPALA-The Opposition Democratic Party (DP) Bloc, a coalition of several political  parties and activists, have scoffed at claims that they recruited singer Joseph  Mayanja aka Chameleon, to fight Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Mr  Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine.

Mr Norbert Mao, the DP president told journalists in Kampala on Tuesday that some people spend a lot of time spreading lies that the DP Bloc recruited Chameleon to fight Bobi Wine, saying all that is empty speculation.

“We do not need to sign an agreement to show that we are in the same struggle with Bobi Wine because, all along, we have been moving together and since he was been banned from holding music concerts, we have been giving him a platform to address his people,” Mr Mao said.

Mr Mao said that they are disappointed with party members who did not appreciate the effort made by the DP Bloc to recruit Chameleon because “he is a big fish and a prominent person”.

“We do not want people to start tarnishing Chameleon’s name that he is a mole from the ruling National Resistance Movement, after all, many people have been  defecting  from that ruling party   join DP,” he said.

Last week, DP announced that Chameleon had been enrolled as a party member, registered under No. 0011650 and immediately appointed as a national mobiliser by Mr Mao.

Immediately after receiving the DP membership card, Chameleon said that he only worked for the ruling NRM to get money.

“I went there [NRM] like other service providers. I was just hired for performances but I swear and you can trace my roots right from my grandparents. They are DP supporters,” he said.

He also announced that he would contest against Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago on the DP in 2021.

Mr Mao said that last week‘s ceremony was not meant to announce a candidate for any position and all members are free to contest for any position including the party leadership.

“Chameleon is not a sole candidate for any position and is free to contest for any position provided he meets the requirement under the party constitution,” he said.

Mr Norbert said that they felt honoured that a popular and successful musician like Chameleon chose DP.

“We are ready to welcome other citizens. We are going to capture the big fish from all parties. You will see more people coming including members of Parliament because DP is the most credible political party in Uganda,” he said.

Mr Mao announced that the DP bloc has finalised plans to roll out a massive registration and recruitment drive of party members starting with central region.

“We are very determined to fumigate the party. To all cockroaches, snakes and rats, there is no room for you in the party because we want true believers in DP,” he said.
