Police in Iganga are holding the district National Resistance Movement (NRM) administrative secretary for allegedly misappropriating Shs18m meant for the party’s grassroots mobilization.
Tonny Nabala was arrested on Wednesday on the orders of Mr Ambrose Mwesigye, the director of mobilization in the office of the party's national chairman.
It is alleged that Nabala misappropriated the said funds which the party had given him to deliver to selected officials from 360 villages in Iganga and Bugweri districts.
Mr James Mubi, the Busoga East police Spokesperson said the funds were reportedly meant to facilitate village officials in carrying out mobilization on the ongoing update of the voters' register.
“Whereas the money was given to him about a month ago, it was found out that he didn’t deliver it to the intended people,” Mr Mubi said, adding that while in detention, the suspect has managed to refund Shs9 million.
“He has so far remitted Shs9 million which we shall tender in as exhibit once he is taken to Court,” he said.
However, efforts to get a comment from Mr Nabala were futile as he remains in detention at Iganga Police Station.
Relatedly, three other officials have been suspended in relation to the alleged misappropriation of funds meant for grass root mobilization for the update of voters' register in Busoga region.
Mr Mwesigye identified the accused as Mr John Magezi, the wealth creation ambassador, Busoga region, Mr Paul Waiswa, the coordinator Eastern media affairs and Mr Ali Muwayi, the wealth creation ambassador Iganga District.
“It is alleged that the three connived with administrative secretaries to defraud the public and have been suspended to pave pay for investigations,” Mr Mwesigye said on Thursday.
He added that for meantime, the party has assigned Mr Daudi Mulwanyi and Ms Norah Namutamba to take over their duties.
When contacted, Mr Muwayi declined to comment on the matter, while Mr Waiswa and Mr Magezi could not be reached as their known telephone numbers were unavailable by press time.
