Kakuyo eulogized as patriotic servant

Hezron Kakuyo

KIRUHURA- Hezron Kakuyo, the father of Ms Allen Kagina (the Uganda National Roads Authority executive director), and father-in law of Prime Minister, Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, was on Saturday laid to rest at his home in Kikatsi Sub-county, Kiruhura District.

He died of heart attack on February 18 at the age of 93. President Museveni, who was represented by deputy Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah, said in his condolence message: “He was one of the patriotic leaders Uganda has ever had.”

Kakuyo served in the King Africa Rifles during the Second World War and worked as a medical assistant and administrator in Kabale, Rukungiri, Masindi, Kasese, Tororo, Jinja and Busoga provinces.

“Whereever he went, he left indelible footprints, I call upon others to emulate him,” Mr Museveni said.

Mr Museveni further said Kakuyo was a hard working and principled man whose words matched his actions, promoted unity and lived as a pillar and a person of enormous influence.

Attendance
On his part, Mr Oulanyah said Kakuyo’s send-off attracted people from all the regions of the country because he was never tribalistic.

“He served the interest of God and he served interest of humanity. That’s why he has brought all these people here,” Mr Oulanyah said.
He added, “he taught all his children that all people are the same and made in God’s image, therefore, equal.”

Dr Rugunda said as learners at Kigezi High School, they were mesmerised by Kakuyo’s smartness when they first met him in Kabale where he worked as medical assistant.

He said Kakuyo was a good example of genuine friendship, a committed government worker and an example that one can live good life after retirement.

Great service
Businessman James Musinguzi Garuga said Kakuyo established school infrastructure in Kanungu District (formerly part of Rukungiri) and helped many unprivileged young people to go to school when he worked as Saza Chief in the area.

Ms Kagina said their father cherished peace, loved deeply, was deeply spiritual, patient and disciplined.

Kakuyo trained as medical assistant at Masaka Medical Training Centre, later studied public and social administration in Britain.
