Man accuses land probe Counsel of taking his property

Kampala. The lead counsel in the ongoing commission of inquiry into land matters, Mr Ebert Byenkya, has been accused by a businessman, Grace Benon Mugisha, of grabbing his property in Entebbe Municipality.
Mr Mugisha has filed a formal complaint before the chairperson of the land probe commission, Justice Catherine Bamugemereire, seeking her intervention.
“Mr Byenkya has treated me very unfairly and unjustly. Madam Lady Justice, does a person who takes other people’s property like Mr Byenkya fit the respected position of lead counsel of your commission, which is investigating land grabbing?” Mr Mugisha asks Justice Bamugemereire in his petition dated April 10.
Mr Mugisha further claims he owned 16 flats in Entebbe Municipality on Nakiwogo Close and in January 2015 while Mr Byenkya’s company CWEZI Properties was renting the premises, he suggested to buy the property.
“I agreed and he made a sale agreement. We signed on the 1st June 2015. He agreed to pay my loan because the property was mortgaged to Housing Finance Bank,” Mr Mugisha states in the petition.
Accusation
Mr Byenkya denied knowledge of Mr Mugisha’s petition but said the businessman could be using dirty tactics.
“I have not seen his letter though he has filed a law suit at the Commercial Court in which he is seeking that we pay him $1.2m (about Shs4.4b). He has not yet fulfilled certain conditions such as getting a consent from Housing Finance Bank,” he said yesterday.
