Man kills woman over missing money

Kampala- Police have said a 28-year-old man has admitted killing a 40-year-old woman after his Shs140,000 went missing from his wallet shortly after having paid sex with her.
The suspect, only identified as Bernard, a resident of Najeera in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District, is alleged to have killed Florida Nakalema at Comfort Lodges Bar and Restaurant in Ntinda, Nakawa Division in Kampala on Sunday night.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesman Luke Owoyesigyire said the suspect made the admission during interrogation on Sunday.

“The suspect said they agreed on the payment for sex and he paid. They went in the lodge and had sex and later spent a night in the same room. But in the morning, when he woke up and checked his wallet, Shs140,000 was missing. He asked her whether she had stolen the money but she denied. He said in anger, they fought and he slapped her and she became unconscious,” Mr Owoyesigyire said. He said the suspect told police that thereafter, he suffocated her using a pillow case.

“He is being held for murder. He is to be taken to hospital for a check-up to know whether he is of sound mind before his file is submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions,” Mr Owoyesigyire added.

After the killing, the panicky Bernard fled the room, which triggered suspicion among the lodge attendants. One of the lodge attendants visited the room only to find Nakalema dead and raised an alarm.

Upon noticing that the lodge management had seen the body, the suspect allegedly fled but ran into a moving vehicle and was arrested by residents and handed over to police.

Police forensic team found Nakalema’s body bleeding from the nose and blood stains on the pillow.

The body was taken for post-mortem while the pillow has been taken by police for further examination and investigation.
