What you need to know:

Background. ‘People’s Government’ was formed by Dr Besigye in 2016 following a contested presidential election. The major aim is to reclaim the allegedly stolen victory by President Museveni. The government has national, regional, district, sub-county, parish, and village assemblies.

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party president, Mr Patrick Oboi Amuriat, has said the establishment of the ‘People’s Government’ has made the party more formidable.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Ntungamo District ‘People’s Assembly’ at Embassy Tours Hotel in Ntungamo Town on Sunday, Mr Amuriat said the structures of FDC and the ‘People’s Government’ at all levels are complementary and they form a strong force prepared to take the national leadership.

He was responding to concerns raised by some Ntungamo party leaders claiming the ‘Peoples’ Government’ was overshadowing FDC’s structures and they wanted to know the distinction between the two.

“We are just intertwined. I just make a phone call and invited Dr Kizza Besigye to Najjanankumbi, Kampala, and he advises me. This kind of relationship has helped us do work even better in FDC,” Mr Amuriat said.

He added: “When Dr Besigye started the ‘People’s Government’, people said he wanted to take over the party, I want to tell you that this is not the case. The ‘People’s Government’ is helping us build structures. The government has its structures so does the party,” Mr Amuriat said.

Dr Besigye asked people not to succumb to fear and financial tokens the ruling party uses to manipulate them. “This should be clearer now, the fight we are in involves resource ownership and control. Don’t reject the money, receive it but show them that you are mature,” he said.
