A police constable has been charged and remanded to prison over the murder of Joshua Nteyireho and Merina Tumukunde on the Entebbe expressway in September 2019.

Entebbe Grade one magistrate Joanita Muwanika heard that on September 5, Police constable (PC) Mr Davis Talemwa and others still at large, near Nabirigwa Bridge on the Entebbe expressway in Katabi Town council unlawfully killed Nteyireho and Tumukunde which is contrary to Section 188 and 189 of the Penal Code Act.

The magistrate told PC Talemwa that he was not allowed to take plea since murder is a capital offence that can only be heard before the High Court.

She said PC Talemwa will only appear before the grade one magistrate’s court to be informed of the progress of investigations into his case.

“When investigations are complete, you will be committed to the High Court. Prosecution is given six months to conclude the investigations,” she said on Friday.

Ms Muwanika further said if the prosecution fails to complete its investigations within the six months, PC Talemwa will be entitled to apply for a mandatory bail.

Court remanded the police constable to Kigo prison until November 18, 2019 when he will be required to appear before court for prosecution to inform court on the progress of the investigations.
