What you need to know:

  • The factory that officially opened in January after four years of waiting, has capacity to crash six metric tonnes of oranges per hour and two metric tonnes of mangoes per hour, with an annual production output of 650,000 tonnes of oranges and 25,000 tonnes of mangoes, respectively.

The Soroti Fruit Factory has finally produced its first processed product, the Teso Juice dubbed ‘Teju’.

The juice is going to be part of the snacks or meals served on the newly launched Uganda Airlines, the Finance ministry posted on its Facebook page yesterday.
The Minister of Trade, Ms Amelia Kyambadde, confirmed yesterday that the fruit factory is now fully functional.

“The fruit factory started production last week. Their juice is already on the market,” she said.
According to the ministry’s Facebook post, Teju juice will hit the Kampala market in two weeks. The 350ml bottle will cost only Shs1,000.

“The factory has been allowed to procure the fruits directly from the farmers. This agro-industrialisation strategy is a true example of value addition,” reads in part the Facebook post.

Efforts to reach out to Capt Ephraim Bagyenda, the managing director of Uganda Airlines, on whether they have entered into a deal with Soroti Fruit Factory to supply them with juice, were futile as his known mobile phone could not be reached by press time.

Background
The Shs48 billion Soroti Fruit Factory was constructed targeting the availability of fruits in Teso Sub-region.
The factory that officially opened in January after four years of waiting, has capacity to crash six metric tonnes of oranges per hour and two metric tonnes of mangoes per hour, with an annual production output of 650,000 tonnes of oranges and 25,000 tonnes of mangoes, respectively.

The construction of the project kicked off in April 2015 and it was scheduled to be completed in 2016.
Production process was, however, delayed due to lack of resources for the investment.
