Thugs raid police post, hack officer, steal gun

KAMPALA. Five suspected thugs are said to have raided Mponye police post, in Makindye West constituency in Kabalagala Police Division and hacked an officer who was on duty before varnishing with his gun.

Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, confirmed the incident saying the thugs raided the police post in the wee hours of Saturday morning when the Officer in Charge (OC) and other officers were on a night patrol.
The hacked officer identified as Kasozi narrated that five men appeared at the station in the middle of the night and when he tried to help them, they pulled out a machete and cut his fingers and neck.

“When he ran for his gun, the thugs hacked his fingers and neck and then fled with his SMG gun which had 30 rounds of ammunitions. Kasozi made an alarm that attracted his colleague who was near the station,” Mr Owesigyire said.

Mr Owoyesigyire added that Kasozi’s colleague, Constable Dickens Alado ran to his rescue but found when the thugs had fled the scene. Constable Alado called the OC who also alerted the Kabalagala Division police commander, Benard Mugerwa.
Mr Mugerwa arrived at the police post with sniffer dogs that led officers to a one of the homes I the area where four men were arrested.

The suspects include Timothy Lutalo, Moses Nyeko, Meddy Bale and Alex Kamugisha. Police said the security guard at the suspects’ home told that they (suspects) returned home at the time when the incident had just happened.
“Flying Squad Unit [FSU] has taken the lead in the investigations but all units are going to ensure that this gun is recovered with immediate effect,” Mr Owesigyire said.
