UHRC receives top global rights rating

Kampala. The Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), a statutory body, has been rated as ‘A Class’ globally for outstanding protection and promotion of human rights.
The UHRC was awarded the ‘A status’ by Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRI) in Geneva, Switzerland on March 6.
The certificate of accreditation was presented to the UHRC chairperson, Mr Med S. Kaggwa, during the annual meeting of NHRIs and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva.
The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions, in accordance with the Paris Principles, has devised three classifications for accreditation for human rights bodies across the world.
‘A’ status, means fully compliant with the Paris Principles; ‘B’, status, means partially compliant; and ‘C’ status, means non-compliant.
UHRC was one of the 77 national human rights institutions globally (NHRI) that got A-Status accreditation in the assessment that was finalised in February last year.
Dr Katebalirwe Amooti Wa Irumba of UHRC at the weekend, pledged commitment to protecting human rights of Ugandans.
“UHRC is grateful to the Government of Uganda, particularly the Justice, Law and Order Sector, the development partners, other non-state partners. We pledge to to fulfill our constitutional mandate of protection and promotion of human rights,” Dr Katebalirwa stated.
