Henry Kalungi and wife Jacqueline have refurbished the volleyball facility at Kibuli SS with an aim of promoting the sport in the school.

Kibuli SS is a sports powerhouse but tends to put more efforts on football, where they are record Schools Cup winners with 11 titles and basketball. Thus other sports like volleyball have had their facilities overlooked and before Friday’s works, the facility was a mere bushy surrounding.

With the works costing more than Shs10m, the facility got a new look and posts given a paint job to match the standards.

But all this started last year when Jacqueline held discussions with Uganda Volleyball Federation president Hadijah Namanda on how to improve the game.

Jacqueline was an outstanding outside hitter at Winthrop University leading the team with kills before she decided to quit the game for marriage with Kalungi, a Uganda Cranes international.

Jacqueline said that her vision was to support the school that brought up Kalungi and develop volleyball to the highest standards.

“Not everyone can make it through soccer. There are many alternative sports to excel,” she stressed.

Rashid Dembe the patron of volleyball at Kibuli SS was excited at the prospect of getting better players.

“We are fired up by their contribution and I think we are now going to be more competitive. A better court means less accidents and thus we should be able to attract new members,” Dembe said.

The facility will today host a volleyball clinic where life skills will also be passed onto the kids.

Yesterday, the couple hosted children at the annual Christmas Party at Buganda Road playgrounds.
