World Cup trio snubbed from She Cranes final squad

KAMPALA. Three star players have reportedly been snubbed for the final She Cranes team that will represent Uganda at Africa Netball Championships due October 18-22 in Cape Town, South Africa.
Centre players Ruth Meeme and Betty Kizza as well as long serving goal attacker Rachael Nanyonga from the Netball World Cup will not be part of the team to South Africa.

These have joined counterparts Sylivia Nanyonga, Lilian Ajio and Muhayimina Namuwaya who were left out of the long squad that started training at Lugogo three weeks back.

Captain and shooter Peace Proscovia also confirmed that she will not be part of the She Cranes squad to South Africa due to injury.

The list from the Uganda Netball Federation (UNF) office has four shooters in Mary Nuba, Irene Eyaru, Stella Oyella and Martha Soigi with youthful defenders Hindu Namutebi, Joan Nampungu, Shaffie Nalwanja, Stella Nanfuka and Irene Mirembe.

Attackers include; Fauzia Nakibuule, Privas Kayen, and a sole centre player Jesca Achan.
Though he was not involved in team selection, head coach Rashid Mubiru seems contented with the team at hand.

“It is not experience or age that matter but also players’ current form matters in team selection. I think the federation based on many qualities to come up with a final list. But all the players are good,” Mubiru said.

“As you know She Cranes coaches are just assigned, we do not have permanent contracts so we have to heed to the federation decisions. My work is to train the players availed to me and make them better players,” he added.

With Swaziland opting out of the continental event this week, Uganda remains in pool B with Zimbabwe, Kenya and Tanzania at the continental showpiece.

Meanwhile pool A has South Africa, Malawi, Zambia and Lesotho.
